Saturday, April 1 - Catalina Island
A quick 1 hour flight on Southwest had us at LAX in no time. Outside we hopped the Hertz shuttle for the 8 minute drive to the rental car lot where we picked up our XTerra. We drove down to San Pedro harbor where we parked and took the Island Express helicopter to Avalon on Catalina Island. The flight was only 15 minutes, a great way to get there.
We immediately saw that the preferred method of transportation on the island is gas powered golf carts. They looked like lots of fun, so as soon as we checked-in at the Pavilion Lodge, we walked a block and rented one for a couple of hours. We drove the "scenic" loop around town which climbed up the mountainside behind the town for some great views. We also stopped at the Wrigley Botanical Garden along the way.
After our drive we walked along the waterfront to the old Casino (which is now a movie theater). There were a number of divers drying off, looking very cold. Brrrr! Then we decided it was time for a cocktail so we went to Antonio's Pizzeria for some lemon drops and peanuts (toss the shells on the floor!). At around 6:00 we walked next door to Armstrong's restaurant where they seated us outside along the water. It was a bit chilly, but they had propane powered heat blasters that kept things comfortable. Then it was back to the hotel for an early bedtime... and we even remembered to set the clocks ahead!
